What Is “Ohana”?
May 11 2012
What is ‘Ohana?
and why you should choose Family Karate…
“The family that kicks together, sticks together,” is the simplest way to sum up our school’s strongest belief: the importance of family. Our name, Family Karate, The ‘Ohana Dojo, is not accidental: we believe in the strength of ’ohana (Hawaiian for family) and the values held therein.
When looking for a martial arts school to join, one should consider more than just the style of martial arts and the programs available.
Family Karate prides itself in the great quality of its facility. Our dojo is open and spacious, light and clean. The mats used for karate classes have the support necessary for karate and judo techniques. The floor used for the adult fitness programs and the Lil’ Dragons classes is specially designed with underlying cushioning to better support our students’ joints.
Family Karate does not use any sort of contract binding students to our program nor do we have testing or belt fees of any kind. Our schedule is flexible and provides students with classes five days a week. Our staff has over fifty years of combined experience teaching, and our martial arts instructors have all earned black belts in Kajukenpo or TaeKwonDo.
Our ‘ohana extends beyond the walls of our dojo with our outreach programs. We travel to day care facilities, schools, senior centers, businesses and homes with martial arts, self-defense, yoga and tai chi programs. In this way Family Karate further promotes its image of extended family.
Our ‘ohana at Family Karate is ever-growing and always welcoming. You can visit us at 8901 Mentor Ave. in Mentor (just west of Memorial Jr. High) or give us a call at (440) 255-7300. Please call if you’d like a free introductory lesson.
We appreciate your interest in the martial arts and Family Karate and hope to see you soon!
